As a globe our carbon dioxide emissions currently exceed the ability of the Earth's ecological systems to absorb them. These excess carbon dioxide emissions are remaining in the atmosphere, warming the globe, and resulting in climate change. In this scenario, the excess carbon dioxide emissions represent our Ecological Footprint and the ability of the Earth's systems to absorb that carbon dioxide is our Biocapacity. To reverse climate change we must reduce our carbon dioxide emissions to match the capacity of the Earth's primary productivity (i.e., green growing things like trees and algae) to capture and remove it from the atmosphere.
