Climate Change and Carbon Dioxide
Gases in the atmosphere absorb infrared radiation, causing warming. This is known as the greenhouse effect. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere include water, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. The greenhouse effect is a natural process and maintains a livable temperature on Earth. The Earth’s average temperature has increased 0.5 to 0.9°C (1.0 - 1.7°F) over the last century. At the same time, the concentration of greenhouse gases due to human activity has increased. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an important heat-trapping (greenhouse) gas, which is released through human activities such as deforestation and burning fossil fuels, as well as natural processes such as respiration and volcanic eruptions.
