CONCEPT: Communication scholar Julia T. Wood defines identity scripts as the "guides for living that define our roles and how we are to play them" (Wood, 2015). We learn these from an early age and throughout adulthood from those who have a heavy influence on us (i.e. parents, authority figures). They shape our values within our culture, as well as provide insight into our personal identity and perspectives within our culture. OBJECTIVE: Recognize the influence and relevance of identity scripts communicated to you in your culture; Compare and discuss your experiences with these influences with your class peers INSTRUCTIONS: Identify 3 concepts to discuss---What you were told (and still believe) about them or their related concepts (e.g. Love--Can refer to marriage, relationships, value placement, etc.). These are typically presented as a phrase or life advice. Try to provide a phrase that has not already been listed by someone else in the class.
