Scenario 1 The Business Program students Fred is a student in the 3rd year business program at a very reputable university. The university professors use the Bell curve to assign grades. The professor made a mistake when he marked the final term paper and calculated the final grade with 75 out of 100 points instead of 65. The bell curve calculated a letter grade of A- for him instead of the C+ he would have otherwise achieved. Joe is the student in the same class the professor mixed the marks up with. Joe ended up with a C+. Joe worked very hard for this class. Studying does not come easy to him. Receiving a C+ grade in this class pushed his average GPA to 7.9 out of 12 points, not enough to receive the scholarship he counted on. He receives no financial support from home and works PT to make ends meet. Joe and Fred are friends. Joe shares with Fred that he does not understand his grade in this class and told him that the bell curve is all screwed up in his eyes. Fred knows that he received a much higher grade than he should have and has the suspicion of what might have happened. Fred gets financial support from home and his parents have high expectations of him. Here are the 5 decision choices.
ch Here are the 5 decision choices. Fred has a difficult time between choices 1 and 2. The professor has to choose initially between 2 choices: look into it or ignore. Furthermore, if he looks into it he has to decide between choice # 4 and 5. 1. Fred makes the decision to keep his mouth shut. 2. Fred goes to the professor and informs him of his suspicion. 3. When Fred approaches the professor, the professor says he is very busy and does not think that there was a mistake. 4. When Fred approaches the professor, the professor double checks the course grades, is surprised and assigns Joe a better course grade. However, he does not change Fred's letter grade because he was honest. 5. When Fred approaches the professor, the professor double checks the course grades, is surprised and assigns Joe a better course grade. In fact, he also changes Fred's letter grade to the one he achieved in this course.
