Many American businesses and individuals are outspoken about what they perceive as violations of rights by state and local governments in the US, but then they turn a blind eye to what are often much more egregious examples of human rights violations in other countries with which they do business. (To be fair, many individual American consumers do the same thing.) Examples of such corporations who seem to apply ethics standards inconsistently include Apple, Nike, Disney, Google, the NBA (and many others), as well as high-profile individuals like LeBron James and major fund manager Ray Dalio. Responses to the following questions:
1) Why do you think such businesses and individuals choose to be
outspoken about hot-button issues in America but are often
completely silent when far worse rights violations are taking place
in other parts of the world in which they are making large sums of
money?
2) What standards of corporate social responsibility should such
entities be held to? (Be specific.)
3) What obligations do you think
American consumers have in choosing those with
whom they will do business?
