Opuon Ia Problem (choose this problem or Option 1b) You are getting your oil changed at the local mechanic's shop when you look over to the other side of the shop and see a car engine suspended from a hoist mechanism as in the picture below. The hoist sits on the ground and is supported by two wheels at A and C. Both the engine and the hoist are stationary. You begin to wonder about the hoist structure, which is a frame, and how it is able to support the engine. This makes you think about the forces experienced by the hoist and, more specifically, the forces experienced by the different members that are pinned together to form the hoist. The mechanic tells you that the engine's mass is , so you decide to perform a static analysis of the hoist to get a better idea of the forces the hoist experiences on member EFG. It is assumed that member and member can be considered as one long member . Use and as shown below the figure. a.) Draw or copy the figure below to the page where you are doing your work. b.) State the Givens, Finds and Assumptions. c.) Draw the fully labeled Free Body Diagram required to solve this problem. d.) Write all equilibrium equations, starting with equations in variable form. e.) Determine all of the forces acting on member EFG. f.) State all of the reaction forces on member EFG with magnitudes and directions.
