1) Analyze the paper's introduction.(a.k.a. background). This section should establish a problem and indicate a potential solution. Does it site previous research? Could the author improve clarity? If it is clear and draws your attention, you can commend the author. 2) Examine the methods section which should be a detailed description of how the study was run. It should be easily read so that another researcher could replicate the study exactly to compare findings. It should include specifics on the materials \& equipment used, the exact procedure, sample size (number of subjects), and method of statistical analysis. Consider why the methods and materials are as they were as their appropriateness is important to determine whether or not the results are valid. Points/questions to consider: Was the sample large enough to justify the conclusion? Were the participants randomly selected or was the specific group used appropriate? Was there bias in participant selection? Are there confounding variables (other variables that could have skewed results)? Use your brain to challenge the author(s)!1 3) How are the results presented? Are they as clear as they could be? They should allow the "average" reader to easily understand the data. Graphs and tables should be shown to make results easier to understand. After reading the article you should not have to refer to the text to understand them. 4) The discussion should explain to the reader how the author views the results. How can the results apply to the general population? How can the results fit in with previous research? The author should discuss validity, limitations, and what could have been done differently. What research should be done as a follow-up and are their other implications made from the finding? 5) In the conclusion, is the text justified based on the results and discussion? it may sound repetitive but, there should be no new information in the conclusion. Is it a strong finish to the articles findings or a weak summary? 6) End your critique with a short paragraph on your overall thoughts. Were you convinced by the author or do you disagree with the conclusions? What limitations did the author fail to mention? How can the information in this study be applied to everyday life?
