The brake shown in the figure below has internal expanding shoes and is 300 mm in diameter. It is actuated by a mechanism which exerts the same force F on each shoe. The shoes are identical and have a face width of 30 mm. The lining is rigid moulded asbestos having a coefficient of friction of 0.35 and exerts a pressure limitation of 1200 kPa.

  1. Draw a detail free body diagram of the component showing all the forces and their respective Cartesian x-y components which is used in your calculations.

  1. Calculate the maximum

2.1  Actuating force F.

2.2  Braking capacity.

2.3  Hinge-pin reactions.

  1. Explain one way in which the design can modified to increase the braking capacity.
  2. Discuss briefly two situations in which this type of brake is applicable   ( Show all workings please)
