The following are the equilibrium between the ocean and the atm. Ka1 and Ka2 are the acid dissociation constants. KH is Henry’s law constant.

Rx 1: ????????2(????) + ????2????(????????) ? ????????2 ? ????2????(????????)         KH = 0.03 M atm-1

Rx 2: ???????? ? ???? ????(????????) ? ?????????????(????????) + ????+(????????)          Ka1 = 9 x 10^(-7) M

Rx 3: ?????????????(????????) ? ????????2?(????????) + ????+(????????)              Ka2 = 7 x 10^(-10) M

(1) If PCO2 at sea-level is 3.6 x 10-4 atm and the pH of the ocean is 8.2, find the conc. of dissolved CO2 in the ocean (i.e., [CO2•H2O] + [HCO3-] + [CO32-]).

(2) Calculate pKa1 and pKa2. Explain why most of the CO2 in the ocean is in the form HCO3- when the ocean’s pH is 8.2.
