This assignment will involve using JASP to answer several research questions using the data set that is attached.  To answer the questions below you will run a one-way ANOVA and a two-way ANOVA. The data come from a fictional study of the stress experienced by All But Dissertation (ABD) students in graduate schools. Some of the regularly experienced stressors are work overload, writer's block, and separation anxiety. Universities usually offer psychological counseling as one way of dealing with these issues.

Data Summary: A sample of subset of 36 participants was selected for this exercise.

1. Days. The number of days between noticing a symptom and seeking assistance.

2 Status. (Add value labels):   0=Non-immigrant, 1=First generation immigrant, 2 = Second generation immigrant

3. Major. (Add value labels):  1= Education, 2=Counseling Psychology, 3=Clinical Psychology

Your tasks

1. Enter the data in Excel, including value labels for status and major. Save as CSV extension. Check the data - under Descriptives run crosstabs - status by major and report your results.  Check the distribution of the DV "days". The mean for days should = 100.58, s =34.439. Is the data skewed? If so, what is the direction of the skew?

2. Then, use/run a one-way ANOVA to test whether Major has any significant effects on the students' delay (days) in seeking counseling. Run, print, and include (all) output including a Tukey post hoc test to compare groups, if the F-test is significant. Provide a written description of the ANOVA results, including the post-hoc tests.

3. Next, make  two-way ANOVA to test whether effects of major on days before seeking counseling differ between immigrant groups. Run descriptive plots for Factors, with Status on Horizontal axis, and Major as separate lines. Again, Run, print, and include (all) output including a Tukey post hoc test to compare groups, when Fs are significant.  Write the complete summary of the ANOVA results - which effects are significant and what does the pattern of means indicate?

Problem 2: Expressive writing and physical health

A team of researchers is interested in the effect on physical health of writing about thoughts and feelings associated with traumatic life events (Expressive Writing). The researchers recruit fifteen undergraduate students to take part in the two-part study.

In part 1 the participants were instructed to write a twenty-minute essay about their most traumatic life experiences. In part 2, the same students were again asked to write a 20 - minute essay, but this time they were instructed to write describing their plans for that day.

At the conclusion of each session, the researchers asked the students to use a Well-Being survey to rate their overall level of physical health (on a scale 0 = very poor health to 100 = perfect health). The sessions were counter balanced.

Below are the readings from the two sessions:

EW: 75, 86, 77, 91, 68, 74, 62, 93, 82, 79, 94, 56, 79, 86, 90

NEW: 81, 76, 71, 70, 62, 50, 58, 63, 76, 64, 65, 72, 52, 59, 60

The researchers were interested in identifying a positive or a negative health effect of expressive writing. Run the proper t test to see if this previous research is supported.

State Hypotheses in words:

H0: __________________________________________________________________________

H1: __________________________________________________________________________

Proper t-test: ___________________ One-tailed or two-tailed? _ _______________

Run the analysis using JASP and "print" and INCLUDE the t-test output. Include a Descriptives plot in  write-up. Using the APA style, report your conclusions in the words (using the variables) of this study based on the research hypothesis and the statistical results. Was the data normally distributed?
