This specimen presents two types of epithelium. On the left is stratified squamous non-keratinizing epithelium and in the lower right you can see simple columnar epithelium. This is one of the locations in the body where there is an abrupt change between these two types of epithelia. Imagine the simple columnar epithelium in this specimen connecting directly to the stratified squamous epithelium with the lamina propria composed of loose connective tissue seen here. This the junction between the esophagus and stomach because the simple columnar epithelium does not contain any goblet cells. The rectum mucosal epithelium is like the colon in which there are many goblet cells. While the the stomach simple columnar cells mucus continuously not in pulses as the goblet cells. Stain: H&E
